What is the journal feature?

Journal is a new take on star ratings. Instead of a scale from 1 to 5, journal offers more options to express your thoughts, including fields for typing your own custom responses.

With journal, you can record your “enjoyment” separately from “made me feel”, with two separate lists of pre-written responses:

Enjoyment

  • One of the best
  • Love it
  • Like it
  • It’s okay
  • Indifferent
  • Mixed
  • Mildly dislike
  • Don’t like it
  • Hate it

Made me feel

  • 🤩 Happy
  • 😤 Aggro
  • 😌 Mellow
  • 🥺 Moody

You can also type a custom response in either list. For the “made me feel” list, you can choose any emoji for your custom response.

Besides the lists, there is also a larger “Notes” text field where you can type anything you want.

All fields are optional (although you do need to fill out at least one field in order to save a journal entry).

You can create journal entries for individual songs, and for entire albums.

When you create a new journal entry, it doesn’t erase your previous responses (unlike star ratings in most other apps). This allows you to go back and look at how your thoughts about a particular piece of music have changed over time. But don’t worry, you can manually delete entries if you want to.

After you have created a journal entry for a song or album, you will see the enjoyment icons and/or emojis in various places throughout the app, such as the album info, song list, and now playing area. Only the information from the most recent journal entry will be shown.

Which sources support journal?

Journal is only available for “On My Mac” sources with Librarian enabled.

Plex and Jellyfin sources have a more traditional star rating feature that can be used instead.
